Summary Experience
Laurie Boorman is an ecologist with over 35 years experience in Britain and many sites in other European countries particularly The Netherlands, France and Portugal. He started his ecological career by doing a DPhil at Oxford University on the ecology of Sea Lavender. After a spell in seed testing at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland he joined the former Nature Conservancy’s Coastal Ecology Research Station in Norwich before moving to Monk’s Wood Experimental Station (now part of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology). In 1997 he established L A B Coastal which specialises in ecological research and consultancy particularly in coastal habitats. Since then work has been undertaken for a wide range of clients in both the public and private sectors.
Laurie has worked for many years on the ecology of salt marshes and sand dunes particularly on the dynamic interactions between these terrestrial habitats and the adjacent marine habitats. Salt marshes can provide living links between marine and terrestrial ecosystems which are crucial for the maintenance of the biodiversity of both habitats. Vegetation has a very important function in stabilising the surface of both salt marshes and sand dunes and as well as studying this he has also highlighted the role of grassed surfaces in maintaining the stability the banks of earth dam surfaces and inland waterways. Habitat restoration and creation has been a further important theme in both inland and coastal habitats.
