Environment Agency Project - Bank Vegetation Management Trials

L AB Coastal was extensively involved in the establishment of a major study financed by the Environment Agency and based in the Anglia Region. Its object has been to study the effects of different vegetation management techniques applied to grass covered flood embankments and Dr Boorman has been retained as an independent assessor during these trials which are now nearing completion. The study involves the effect of a range of mowing and herbicide treatments on the grass swards and assessing the likely resistance to erosion of the resulting vegetation cover. The vegetation trials involve sites at Ely and Reach Cambridgeshire and Billingborough, Lincolnshire and will provide an improved understanding of the effect of management interventions on the performance of the flood banks and especially along lowland rivers under service conditions.
